CARMS Profile - Dr. Maher M. Matar
Where did you train?
I completed both my undergraduate and medical training at the University of Ottawa. I went on to McGill University for General Surgery, and spent a year as a Trauma Fellow here in Ottawa, then a year at the Medical University of South Carolina in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
What do you like about general surgery?
I love the fact that it is hands on, and that there is a huge variety of subspecialties within General Surgery that accommodates our different personalities and traits.
What is your sub-specialty?
Trauma, Acute Care Surgery and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
What do you like about this program?
I think that our residents have great exposure and autonomy on the Acute Care Surgery service, with great operative exposure in complex patients. Our staff are very down to earth and easy to get along with.
What is your hope for this program?
That it graduates residents that are competent, humble and confident when they are delivering care to their patients.
Do you have a special role in the residency program? What do you do?
Education lead for the Acute Care Surgery service at the General Campus. Ensure that residents have a great learning experience while on that service.
What do you like about training residents?
I love the residents' enthusiasm and thirst for learning. When their eyes open wide after they see a life saving procedure for the first time, and then the smile on their face when they execute it on their own....priceless.
What is your favourite thing to teach?
TRAUMA!!!
What is the thing you're the most proud of in your professional life?
Ability to maintain a healthy personal life.
What do you do outside of work?
Spend time with my wife and 3 kids.
